This is the one week where I get to prepare for the upcoming NAC. Alas, I am working most of the time. In addition, I seem to have come down with a cold and don't think it would be wise to make things worse. I can hardly breathe as it is and I don't want to have any more difficulties. I have been trying to keep up with work outs and such. Went for a run today with a friend who is training for a soccer team. It was great because I was pretty consistent throughout the run, but I decided it would be best to save my knees for the inevitable crazy work day in store...
Seriously...
Wednesdays suck. Old people discount day. I think most of them are alright, but there are a couple of people who just treat me like absolute crap. I can't hear anything to begin with, I'm sick, and there are eight million things that are happening in the section. I am so sorry that I didn't hear you the first time and asked you to repeat yourself, but you don't have to be rude!
I'm not sure how much of tomorrow I am planning on doing. I've been working pretty hard throughout the week, been doing my workouts, but definitely have been lacking the fencing practice... Ah well, the NAC will essentially be for fun anyway...
Now I need to start thinking about finding another job. I need to stay with the same company, but there aren't any positions available at the store that I'm currently at. I did find one at Vancouver, though. I might apply for it- something to discuss with the handsome lad.

Christmas Day and beyond
One of the best holidays ever! It was really nice to be able to enjoy the holiday with close friends and not have to deal with the drama.
In addition, one of the best moments of the holiday included a snake in a bag... except there was no snake. A friend of mine had gone to Cambodia for a couple of weeks and had brought back a bunch of lovely gifts for everyone. One of the gifts that most received was a bag. When the recipient had started to open the bag to see what was inside, her husband suggested that there was a snake. The recipient pulled back their hand as quickly as they could- as if there had been a real snake in the bag! (This would have been illogical, but it was just so amusing to see this over-the-top and irrational reaction that I couldn't stop laughing.) I suppose it was one of those moments that you had to be there.
In addition, today I officially finished my Kitsune mittens. They turned out really well, in my opinion. (I should be putting up pictures in the near future). The next project that I plan on doing is the Satine: floaty tunic from French Girl Knits. I love pretty much all of the projects in that book and it is my goal to knit pretty much all of them (there is only one that I don't like at all- the blue and white cardigan...)
Work has been going well, but I will be finished soon... I hope that I can stay on longer, though... It has been such a great experience and I am really not looking forward to having to look for another position...

Christmas Eve
This day was long, but a great experience... One of the best holidays that I've had in a looooong time. For a change, though, we decided to not going down to the 'burg. There is just so much family drama and I really wanted to avoid it. In any case, we had a lovely dinner with our friends (actually, at the moment, I am being rude and antisocial and I am not entertaining my guests... Simon and Aaron are playing the Xbox- Halo, of course...)
I figured that I would post a brief description of the day that I had. I got to work. It wasn't as horrible as I thought, I did get a bit frazzled. I apologized and was better the rest of the day. I think everyone was at the end of their patience. Lots of people being stupid and trying to get last minute food items the day before Christmas.
After that, to home I went. Prepared the rolls and Simon had already started the turkey. Here is what we had for dinner: Turkey, potato rolls (a tradition from my family and a good one at that), asparagus with hollandaise sauce, mashed potatoes, gravy (made from the drippings of the turkey and white wine), and some great pinot gris to accompany it. There was also a bottle of wine from Lodi, California. It was an absolute perfect accompianment to the dinner. Warm and mellow, smooth and dry... Hints of mocha, vanilla, and raspberry...
For dessert: Gateau maison. A delicious cake made essentially with butter, almond flour, and sugar. Not healthy in any sense of the word but so worth the extra poundage.
Tomorrow will involve cinnamon rolls, sticky rolls, late breakfast or lunch (I am sincerely looking forward to sleeping in) and being with the rest of my surrogate family.

The holidays
Are decidedly less interesting if you happen to work in a grocery store. I am so surprised how awful people can be to one another during this time. People seem to have forgotten the "goodwill towards others" and are more concerned about making sure that they get their stupid turkeys or hams... Yes, I understand the importance of this family meal, but you will get your turkey... Just not as quickly as you wanted. There are other people in front of you and there is only so much magic I can work at the moment.
Other than that, folks seem to be relatively chill... You can certainly tell who has worked in a service position and who hasn't.
On a diffrent note: knitting has been going well. I've almost finished the kitsune gloves and will be posting pictures shortly. I knit a hat for work and used the left over yarn to knit a baby hat (something I have never done, so I'm not sure the size is going to be alright)... Also, I got a substantial amount of yarn as a gift and have started to knit the Satine floaty tunic tank from French Girl Knits... I love pretty much all the patterns int that book.
There is a fencing camp coming up and I am sad because I'm not sure I'll be able to participate...

Exhausted
This has been one of the most exhausting weeks I've had (even including the craziness that was Thanksgiving week...) I find it to be very difficult to try and maintain two jobs, chiropractor sessions, and fencing consistently. It feels like I am pulling 12 hour work days on an all-too- regular basis. I'm glad that this year is almost over, though.
It's been great having the mother-in-law here for a visit. She's so adorable!
I haven't had much time to knit (I've only got an inch on my second kitsune mitten) and I find that to be very frustrating. This weekend I'm working Friday, Saturday, Sunday... but that is pretty much it.
This is one of my more rambling posts- it's more like a stream of consciousness and it's kind of interesting to see how ideas flow one to the next.
Yesterday, I learned how to properly clean a crab. It was also one of the /most/ frustrating days I've had in a while (and, yes, that even includes fencing practice.) It was one of those moments where I realized that I am completely uneducated about what it is that I should be doing. I don't know all of the different procedures that are necessary. It feels like I am making things more difficult for my coworkers (and I hate that). I am learning a lot of new stuff and feel like I /could/ be more useful at some point, but right now I feel inept and useless...
The handsome lad doesn't understand. In any case, he doesn't really listen... or at least that's what it feels like. It would be nice to have an actual conversation instead of me feeling like I'm talking to a wall. Active listening is such a great thing to know how to do... the only problem is I know when other people aren't really doing it...
There I go- whining about nothing. How typical.

A post
Sometimes it is frustrating writing this blog. It is a bit relaxing and I feel like it has some therapeutic qualities, but it doesn't feel like I'm making any connections... except with what I assume to be Spambots from a eastern european country....

Des nouvelles
So, the mother-in-law is in town. It is both exciting and a little frightening (in the respect that I'm not a very good host and I have no idea what I should be doing with her)... So far, we've done a substantial amount of shopping, ventured to Salem to find her an anorak that was on sale (and also becoming horribly frustrated with the traffic and stupid way that Salem is set up...), and watching a fencing competition.
Today, the handsome lad is working at a camp at the club. So, I'm on my own today. I'm not sure if we are going to the art museum today or what. I really like to get an early start on things, but it doesn't seem like that is /ever/ going to happen this week or next (already pretty late in the day and we haven't done anything yet.) It's okay though. I do appreciate the lax rhythm that is created- it is definitely a change of pace from the constant pressure of life. I feel so busy all the time and it is exhausting. I suppose that is inevitable when you are trying to be competitive and are working a couple of jobs.
I think, if I can, I will try to knit a bit more. I finally finished one of the mittens and have actually cast on for the second mitten, but haven't had much opportunity to work on it. I should also try to take some photos to show the progress that has been made.
Other than the mittens, I haven't done much else. I would really like to figure out a project for the lovely recycled silk that I have (I'm thinking a cowl would be pretty neat in the yarn, but I'm not sure if there is enough...) If worse comes to worst, I will just have to create a pattern to really show off the beauty of the silk.

First opportunity in a while...
to actually post something, that is... I'd been busy with my jobs (it was impossible to go to fencing, of course)... Monday and Tuesday were extremely difficult. On Tuesday, I called in sick to the morning job because I was feeling under the weather (very much so), but went into the afternoon job anyway... Biggest mistake ever... I ended up staying almost an hour after my shift had ended (not that there is anything wrong with that- it was expected and I was more than happy to help out my overwhelmed colleagues...) Went to the fencing center to pick up the boy and broke down into tears... Everything hurt, I was shaking... Definitely sick.... went to bed as quickly as possible and more or less devoured a handful of ibuprofen... as soon as the shaking stopped, I was able to go into a state of psuedo-sleep. just enough to be reasonably rested, but awake enough to know that I had to get up soon (and quickly) or there was going to be a mess very shortly... The next day, I got to call in sick to both jobs... I think the water bill for the next month is going to be astronomical... trying to take warm showers, getting rid of the sick in the toilet on a fairly regular basis...
Today is Thanksgiving.. I didn't get to leave the bed, but I was feeling a bit better.. stomach is still upset, but not as much as yesterday... Didn't get to have any tasty Thanksgiving food either. But, I am thankful that I am still alive (seriously, felt like I was gonna die), and very thankful for the handsome lad that was looking after me...

Longest (and most difficult) weekend
This week has been pretty tough. Trying to survive the fact that I don't know anything about meat and having to work in the meat department. Next week will be a nightmare (what with Turkey day and all, but at least I will only have to work three days in a row...) Yesterday was pretty stressful... started at 7:30, finished first job at 10:45, went to work at 11:00am, finished second job at 7:02, worked third job from 7:17 pm-9:00 pm, and took a lesson at 9:00 and went for an hour... Bed time at 11:00pm. Up the next morning at 6:00 and working the rest of the day.
Needless to say, I didn't get an opportunity to try any new cooking techniques yesterday (ate the leftovers of the Oxtail stew- still delish) and had some dark chocolate chip cookies.
Tomorrow is the competition. I'm actually going to be fencing and I am already stressed out. I hope that I do well, but I'm trying not to put too much pressure on myself. It's been a while since I've been competitive and I want to do well, but I can't really (reasonably) expect great things after such a long time of not fencing.
The best part about today is the fact that I get to hang out with my fellow armorer and friend the entire weekend. ^_^
Tonight, I have no idea what I am going to cook- I think it should be high in protein in preparation for the competition, but not too heavy... I will have to ponder...

Le saumon a la teriyaki
Le diner hier soir etait le saumon a la sauce teriyaki. Although, I already feel pretty confident when it comes to cooking fish. The teriyaki sauce was great- it was something like "Veri Veri Teriyaki" and it had some delightful chunks of garlic and sesame seeds.
For dessert, I made dark chocolate chip cookies (well, technically, I made them for the competition tonight- to make armoring a bit more tolerable...)
For breakfast this morning, I cooked up some apple chicken sausage. It was sweet, but not overwhelmingly so.

Trying new things!
So, I've decided to become more familiar with the meat department. As such, I've taken to selecting one item from the department and I am attempting to cook it correctly. Yesterday was Lamb Gyro patties. I put it on a delicious slice of French bread- it would have been perfect if I'd had tsatsiki sauce. Tonight, I am baking a stuffed cornish game hen. I'll pair it with some potatoes (it would be nice to create a nice sauce, but I'm not that adventurous yet...) Tomorrow, I will attempt to conquer oxtail soup!!

merf
There are just these moments where my self-doubt is incredibly overwhelming.
It was probably made painfully obvious this weekend with one of my friends. They decided to remind me how much different I am from what I was in highschool. I think the worst part was that they made a point of telling me how scornful "old me" would be of "current me"... It's true. If I had've know what I would be like now, I would hate myself too...

Surviving a second day
I made it through a second day! I learned some things that were very surprising (and not so surprising)- Surprising things included:
- People abandon the food that they asked for pretty much anywhere in the store. Why this surprised me: If you ask for something, I would suppose that the intention was to buy it and eventually consume it. This is horrible, because it is a waste of food (I mean, you can't really sell meat if it's been sitting randomly in the store and you don't know how long its been sitting...)
- It's really easy to separate chicken thighs from the drumstick. How, you may ask? There is a little line of white tissue that marks (generally) where the chicken-y "kneecap" would be. You just slice there and it's done... Easy! I did five of those- I totally felt like an actual cook, lol!
Things that weren't so surprising:
- Little, old ladies can be really awful... and some of them I want to glare at. There are eight-million things going on in that department, there is a lot of noise... I can't hear you when your nose is stuck to the glass cabinet. Also, I'm sorry to disappoint you, but I'm new and I haven't memorized where every type of sausage is (yet)... I promise that I'll be better soon, but please be a little understanding.
- My right wrist hurts. A bazillion repetitive wrappings. Inevitably, my wrist feels like I've been doing eight lessons with horrible technique. On the plus side, though, I am feeling more capable of wrapping things and doing things more efficiently (even after only two days).
It was a great learning experience and I feel like I am becoming more familiar with and understanding the product that is being sold. huzzah! I just have to keep thinking about how to properly wrap awkward things like fish, skewers, ribs, and things that are long and jabby. The thing to do today is call in and try and resolve scheduling issues for this weekend. I hate having to do this during my first week, but I know that I'd discussed it when I was hired. le sigh. I have to make sure that I am able to direct the competition on Saturday (earning my entry for Sunday.) So many scheduling things that I have to work out!!

New Job!!
Today was the official first day of work. There is so much to learn!!! I'm a bit nervous because I'm not all that great at cooking, and I don't understand all of the terms that are being thrown at me... Also, I definitely feel "math-tarded" 90% of the time... well, that's to say when people ask for anything other than a pound of something (ounces are stupid and useless.. I do love the metric system... as long as I don't have to convert)
Tomorrow, I get to do it all over again. ^_^
On the knitting front, it's been going pretty well... Stuck on the thumb of the mittens- I think it's mostly because it isn't very fun to knit and I've got a long thumb. Instead of doing the different pattern on the "right side", I'm just doing the stripey-bit. It looks pretty nice (my opinion).

Feeling sick
Finished work and started to feel like I was made of 'ick'. Decided to stay home tonight (I don't like to go to fencing on Wednesdays anyway because team fencing is not my favorite.) I've been trying to find books with either craft projects that are environmentally friendly and found some pretty interesting things:
"Eco-chic home" sounds the most promising to me- there is a recycled magazine bowl that I think will be a lot of fun to make and will look pretty nifty around the appartement. There a lot of other projects available as well and I think it would be fun to go to a second-hand store (or, of course, use some of my old junk) to create new, nifty projects.
Also, I'm continuing with my mittens and I've woven in all the ends on the vest. It is now a simple matter to add buttons and re-block the vest. I can't wait to wear it!!

A Trek-tastic day
Decided not to go into practice today. Instead, Deep Space 9 was thoroughly enjoyed and comics were worked on. I've come to the bitter realization that I will never be able to draw like Jim Lee... lol... such is life. However, I am pleased with how the second page is coming along. I wish that I could draw at a faster pace and still make it look decent.... and also a better drawing of backgrounds would be nice... or just non-human entities... like rocks and trees and things.
On the plus side, with practice, it's going to get better and better.

Training
So, instead of providing pictures, I decided to head over to fencing practice. It actually went pretty well and I'm feeling a bit more confident about the upcoming (local) competition. I still have to keep moving my feet (which always seems to be problematic) and the only thing that I'm feeling a bit frustrated about is the fact that I feel winded. My lungs don't seem to be doing their job properly... It feels like there is no air and that I'm being crushed from the pressure of my jacket. Usually, it helps if I take off my mask and unzip my jacket, but I know that won't fly in a competitive environment. We'll see how that goes...
On a separate note: though my back has been doing much better, it still hurts tonight (another reason why I called it a night pretty early today...)
Hopefully, the next post shall include photos.. although, I will include a picture of the camp that happened this last weekend.. Well, it was more of a training session than a camp. A lot of great people showed up.
Sometimes it is just so frustrating to remember how far I went in this sport and to realize how much more I will have to work to get back to that point, let alone get better! It's important to stay positive and it's proving to be difficult. I know that I can do this: it will be tough, but there are a lot of people that believe in me. It's unfortunate that there are people that don't believe in me- this is made even more difficult because that particular individual's opinion is something that I value. Oh well... whatcha gonna do? Gonna tough it out and listen to my music and to all the wonderful people around me and just work hard... I don't really know how to do anything else. :P

Day of Finishing
I intend for today to be a day of finishing projects. Essentially, I have several more-or-less finished products that are in need of woven-in ends, buttons, or other such things that have been sitting around the appartement. Today will be a good day to fix that.
I've got my gloves, vest, mittens, corgi, and a couple of other projects to finish. Plenty of things to do today. At the end of it all, I hope to have pictures because, let's face it, no one is really interested in what I have to say about such and such project, but are more-so interested in the finished product of hours of agonizing (at least, I would be anyway.)
I think my favorite project was the Knotty gloves. They were done in Trekking, which is a sock yarn. The gloves remind me of summer time and watermelons. Honestly, these are probably the only pink thing I would ever wear (and actually look forward to wearing...)
The alpaca mittens are coming along nicely- I just have to finish the thumb of the left mitten and weave in the ends.

The alpaca mittens are coming along nicely- I just have to finish the thumb of the left mitten and weave in the ends.

Encore un jour spectaculaire
Today went well. Filled out paperwork for a temp position that I've been trying to get for a while.
Also, practice went well. But that isn't what I'm most happy about.
No, indeed, I am most content with the fact that I am making such great progress with the mittens (and, even better, took pictures!!! I'm noticing that the stitches between each of the needles are either a bit too loose or a bit too tight, which is a little frustrating, but I am hoping that when I block the mittens out that it will even out a bit. This alpaca wool is so luxurious!! I almost wish that the days would get colder faster so that I could wear these mittens justifiably. Not only are they warm and soft, but the mitten that I'm working on looks fantastic. Initially, I thought that I wasn't going to enjoy the fluffiness of the alpaca for this knit (in fact, just because I am curious, I will probably knit these gloves in some sort of sock yarn. The pattern is fun and I think it would be a great gift for people...) but I am delighted to report that it is most enjoyable. I'm using a yarn from Sherwood, Oregon from a farm called "Alpacas of Oregon". Each skein is about 230 yards of super soft, super warm alpaca luxuriousness. I'm apparently using yarn from "Glacier" and "Black Opal". ^_^ Actually, the only thing that I haven't liked about this yarn is the fact that it is so easy to split. But, that might not necessarily be the yarn's fault- as it is two-ply and very fluffy (thus, difficult to see the stitches...)

Les Mittens
A substantial amount of progress was made on the Kitsune mittens. This stranding technique is actually quite challenging (I found it especially difficult and slow when working the stitches for the thumb. At some point, I might try to figure out a better way to do it.)
I'm halfway through the fox and should be starting my decreases soon. I'm really pleased with the way that it is looking (despite the fluffiness of the alpaca) and can't wait to try on these toasty warm things- just in time for the nasty, cold weather of the Pacifc NW.
No pictures as of yet (sorry, adoring public- that is to say, all two of you), the camera is at the club at the moment and I haven't had a chance to take any pictures to show off some of my work. I would like to try to do that more consistently, but it's proving to be difficult and will be even more so when I start my second part-time job. I'm looking forward to the new environment and extra income, but not enjoying the fact that this will be cutting into practice and I'm not sure how I will be able to squish everything into one day. ah well.. c'est la vie...

Damnation!
Gah! I'm so frustrated! I wasn't paying attention to what I was doing and pulled the wrong needle!! I ended up losing the stitches and since I couldn't see the brown stitches well enough to pick them back up, I just tore it all out.. :(
I'm gonna find a worsted weight mitten to do instead.... then I will try again...
However, on the bright side of things: I did manage to finish all of the knitting on the vest. I will just have to weave in the ends and put on the buttons. It looks really great. It will have to be blocked again so that the ribbing looks a bit better than it does now, but that shouldn't be an issue...

Tricote
So, still working on mittens.. It's going faster than I expected.. I will definitely need to get pictures up. Perhaps that shall be a goal for tomorrow. It will be necessary to find time each day to work a little on a projects and also to find time to work on this blog. It sounds angsty and such, but it would be nice to find my voice and a niche to express myself.
Today was not a good day to knit, however... Ended up reffing a squishy epee tournament (of which there was an absolute dearth of quality fencing- ah! youth!) and also assisting as an armorer. I do love armory work. In addition to that, I did manage to get a bit of work done on comic book characters! It's been difficult, but it is coming along relatively well. Unfortunately, there are no dragons to be drawn in this comic...
Ben, en tout cas, j'ai eu des moments exceptionnels et assez agreable. Jenny etais la, donc j'ai eu une conversation intelligente et superbe.

On recommence
Once again, I find myself not sure what to do. Inevitably, I feel as though I should focus this blog more on fiber work than anything else- it is, after all, a blog named "Twisted Stitches".
Today was a good day for learning new techniques. I shall have to take pictures of my most recent projects (which include, gloves (with actual fingers), a cardigan, mittens (learning how to do proper colorwork and working with the most dreamy alpaca yarn), and a vest.) Also, it was nice because I was able to find some really /great/ buttons for future projects. Going to the antique store can lend itself well to making some great discoveries.
In any case, I just started a fantastic new project called, "Kitsune". As I've said, I'm learning a new technique, which has (consequently) managed to cramp my left hand.
- What's this, you say? Why is your left hand cramped?
- Because, I interject, I'm knitting with both hands. Redundant, you think? Not at all. The left hand works continental and the right works "normal". Madness, I tell you. So far, it is slow going (unavoidable with these blasted "new" techniques), but I am confident that I will be able to pick up the pace and be done with these gloves by next summer... (I jest, of course- or rather, I hope, that it won't take me so long..)
Naturally, I'm wondering if I can take this blog to the next level and develop a following. Perhaps it is something to explore.

Je suis sure que je voudrais etre sur l'equipe de 2016. Il faut qu'il soit un but et pas un reve. LP a eu raison a cet egard, je trouve. Fin, je sais qu'il a raison sur beaucoup d'autres egards aussi.

On recommence

"City Coat" is finally finished!!
It has been a long, hard battle, but I have finally finished the City Coat. But, I cheated (I'll admit it.) I turned it into a long vest- that is to say that I didn't add the stupid sleeves. It looks pretty good. Tonight is the night where I block the sucker and figure out how I will fasten it shut (I made it so that I wouldn't get cold and such... Pictures will eventually be posted, I swear. ^_^

New lace work + shawl
No, I am not knitting a lace shawl (although, that would make the title more logical), but I am working on a couple of projects.
I finished the gray tunic, called Nadine, (I just have to block it out) and will post pictures of that relatively soon. Suffice it to say that I am quite pleased with it.
I am working on a triangular shawl called the "wool peddler's shawl" but with a modified ruffle edge on it instead of the (what appears to be) dragon scale lace.
Secondly, I will shortly begin work on another pattern from French Girl Knits called Delphine. I tried casting on for it last night, but ran into a problem with the lace pattern.

couple of projects
Photos of two of my projects! The gray thing is almost done. One shoulder to seam, ends to weave in, and a hem to crochet on.
The other is my mindless, "YO! Drop it" scarf.
The only complaint that I have about the gray thing is that it was /way/ too much kitchener stitch. On the plus side, I definitely feel like I've got a handle on the technique. :D Knit one off, purl one on; purl one off, knit one on... repeat... kind of a pleasant little mantra, but insufficient for 320ish stitches worth of kitchener

On my needles
I've got a couple of projects that I'm currently working on. Now that I've graduated, I seem to have a bit more free time on my hands (and that usually means either blogging or knitting... I do prefer the knitting bit...)
Currently, I am knitting a pattern from the book "French Girl Knits" called "Nadine". I wish that I were knitting it up in that fantastic green, but it is being worked in a lovely gray color. The yarn is a worsted weight, silk/wool blend, made by Bamboo Ewe (Stitch Nation). I've made gauge, which is great, but I think it might end up being too small (I was a little optimistic in my measurements, so that poses a problem. I will add an inch or two on the back panel to try to compensate.)
The second project is less exciting. It's knit up in some sort of ribbon. The pattern is "Yo! drop it!" from one of the Stitch and Bitch books.

Post one
Following the recommendations of my friends and students, I have started a new blog- this one- called "Twisted Stitches". My intent is to create a knitting blog, not necessarily posting help (I need to reference youtube videos and other blogs just like any other noob-knitter), but more of a "how am I doing?" sort of thing. I think it will mostly consist of projects that are currently on my needles (this will ultimately motivate me to take more photos) and things that I intend to create. I hope to develop my skills to the point that, yes, I will be able to give advice. We shall see how it goes for now.
